A bit of History

Historicaly speaking, Hirudotherapy could be compared with the medical history itself. The fisrt information about Hirudotherapy we can get from the Ancient Egypt - they were inscripted on the old temples and Pharaon's graves. The first scientist of the Ancient Greece who started examining the leeches was Nicandr from Calofana(200-130 b.c.) Also the method is described many times in the papers of Hippocrates, Galalen and Avicena. During the XVI and XVII centuries the treatment with leeches was very popular. In fact it was so popular in Europe, that France alone in 1850 used 100 mil pieces.

In Romania, in the XIX-XX century treatment for any diseas started by applying leeches. It's an interesting fact that leeches were not used only in medical purposes, but also in cometics and alimentation. It is a knwon fact that before all kinds of Balls, even the imperial representatives applied leeches on special spots behind the ears, the effect being rosy cheeks all night.

The king of Austria, August the II, prefered the invitations to dinner at places where leeche sausages were served(leeches were applied on a well fed duck; after they were full they fell on the baking tin and put in the oven; the sausages were crispy and dietary).

Nowadays, the abuse of chemical medicaments became a disaster which could be easily compared to the change in climate or air polution. This is a reason why since the beginings of the 1980's everybody tends to use non-medicamentous metheods of treatment. Therefore hirudotherapy, as an ancient and unfortunatelly forgotten method realy lives a second rebirth. If the testing periods for all kinds of new medicaments and drugs are 5-10 years, then the healing effect of hirudotherapy has been tested for thousands of years. Unfotunatelly the inclusion of hirudotherapy in the wide range of medical practice happens very slowly, due to the fact that it requires a personal approach to every single pacient. The healing result of the method is generated by a local effect of fluidisation of the blood circulation and a general impact on the body.
