In the past 15 years more and more countries started their own research and development programs in hirudotherapy. In 1990 the International Society for Hirudotherapy created and already in 1991 the first international Hirudologic conference was held. After many researches it was found out that the leech saliva contains many bio-active substances with curative(healing) effects.

Hirudotherapy, or treatment with leeches is not easy method of treatment as ay appear at the first glance. There are no side effects in the method, if all procedures and techniques are being respected and followed. In the contrary, the method applied incorrect, may cause difficulties, especially if not applied on the right spots.

The effect of the hirudotherapy is complex and multilateral, haveing a mecanical, biological and quantum aspects. Thus, the leeches may be used in treating a large range of diseases, in some cases even when other methods don't help or have little impact.

In the past few years, the popularity of the use of the leech as a "medicament" grew a lot. Day by day more doctors admit that Hirudotherapy is a very effective method in treating some very difficult diseases. Many TV Channels as Discovery, National Geografic and others have showed documentaries where they explain hirudotherpy and give basics theory about the method.
